New Methods

I’ve been working on a painting and I finally admitted to myself that I really didn’t like where it was going. I decided to start over and experiment yesterday.

I decided to sketch out my drawing with liquid masking fluid instead of a pencil. I used a bamboo skewer to do the work, and it worked out way better than I’d imagined! If I made a mistake I just removed the masking and tried again.

Then I flooded the paper with water and squeezed out some gouache directly from the tube before using a brush.

Yes, I took the picture on my back deck. I think I’m going to call this one I Will Take You and Leave You Alone, because I was listening to Neutral Milk Hotel yesterday and it seemed fitting and I like to be emo in all things.

That looks fun! I’ve never used masking fluid — some mental block about watercolor in general — but I love what you’ve done here. Especially as a way to shake things up. Thanks for sharing this.
